Art, Architecture, and Sacred Geometry in conversation

San Giorgio Maggiore Abbey, Venice , Italy

August 26 - October 7, 2018

A new exhibition of drawings by contemporary artist Linda Karshan are shown alongside a Sixteenth Century manuscript in the world famous Chiesa San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice.

London and New York based artist Linda Karshan exhibits over 40 drawing at the world famous Chiesa San Giorgio Maggiore, on the island of San Giorgio, Venice, Italy.

The exhibition brings together drawings by Karshan spanning a 25 year period that explore line, geometry and balance. A strong sense of geometry is evident throughout the city’s iconic and vernacular architecture and one of the most striking examples is the venue for the exhibition, the Palladio designed Chiesa San Giorgio.

Karshan’s more recent drawings are created through a process of balancing on pointe and, as she sets her hand to follow her internal rhythm, she will slowly pull her pencil across the page - spinning the sheet clockwise to repeat her action and make her next mark . Drawing with her right hand whilst being left handed, a profound mark is made through an action of rhythm, balance and control. Curator Richard Davey says:

‘Venice is a city in balance, a city traversed by waterways. Making the water crossing to visit San Giorgio requires a similar act of balance that we find in Linda’s work. Balance is a key experience of being in Venice, central to Linda’s working process and the finished compositions of her drawings.’
